Migrate Exchange 2010 Mailbox server to new machine

Hello All,

I am tasked with migrating two Mailbox Role servers from their existing hardware to new hardware. Unfortunately, I am out of my element here. The senior engineer left two weeks ago and the higher ups want me to carry out the migration that he was going to do.

The hardware configuration is as follows: All using Win2k8r2 & Exchange 2010 SP1.

EXCHANGE01: Mailbox Role - DAG

EXCHANGE02: Mailbox Role - DAG

EXCHANGE03: Hub, Client Access

EXCHANGE04: Hub, Client Access

Exchange 01 and 02 are the servers that need to be replaced. I've been reading everything I can find about this type of migration but I'm feeling a bit lost.

I have read that I can just bring the new servers online with different names and IPs. Then install Exchange, add them to the DAG and copy databases to the new servers. Does that sound right? It seems like it should be...

How do you deal with Exchange Powershell Scripts?

I am starting to collect a bunch of Exchange Powershell scripts. How do most people deal with having so many scripts. I have other admins that would like to use these scripts as well. I would like to have just one directory with all my scripts. I was trying to create a directory or menu of my scripts but was having no luck making one with a batch file or another Powershell script. So how do you keep track of lots of scripts?

Also are there any Exchange scripts that you use all the time? I am having a hard time sorting the scripts on this site. They appear to be sorted by name which does me no good.

Remove Exchange mailbox for a deleted user

I had someone delete a user in Active Directory.  However their Exchange 2010 mailbox is still intact.  Now when I try to disable or remove the mailbox, the operation fails because it can't find the user in AD.  The user deletion was over 6 months ago.  This user does not show up in disconnected mailboxes but does show in recipient configuration mailboxes

How can I get rid of this mailbox?

Active Sync Exch 2010 for personal smart phones

I need a solution for users who connect to Exchange 2010 via activesync with their personal phones.  They are prompted during connection with a warning that Exchange has full admin control and we can wipe their phone, etc...  The standard EAS message.

Is there a way to configure active sync to not prompt the end users with this message or configure an active sync profile to not allow the ability to wipe the end users personal phone, but just delete email.

Exchange 2013 / Barracuda ESS / Dell Sonicwall / DNS / godaddy domain

Ok so I'm not the average dummy when it comes to these things but I am at a loss. I am in the process of setting up an email server (Exchange 2013) in our company. What we are wanting to do is route all incoming and outgoing email through Barracuda's Email Security service. The domain we have purchased was through godaddy. I have changed the MX records on godaddy to point to the barracuda service per their technical support. I have configured our Dell sonicwall to allow the exchange server public server access through their public server wizard. I added the barracuda ip address to the address objects on the sonicwall as well. Do I need to add the new email domain to DNS on our domain controller? Do I need to add or change anything in the send and receive connectors in exchange 2013? I'm at a loss right now on how to get everything...

Exchange 2013 Public/Private SSL certificates

Hi All,

Exchange 2013 running on Server 2012. We were using a certificate from Digicert which covered all of our server names (internal and external). Well, due to the new SSL policies, 2 of the internal names on the certificate had to be removed. So we are receiving some SSL cert errors internally. servername.domain.local and servername.

I've seen a couple of sites that suggest I can run a public CA for external names and a private CA for internal names, but no instructions on how to set this up.

Any posts on the web with details instructions, or has anyone here had to this?

Thank you,

Remove Deleted Items Older than 90 Days from Deleted Items

$

We are attempting to enforce mailbox cleanup but forcing items older than 90 days that are in the Deleted Items folder in a user's mailbox to be permanently deleted. This will tie into our new email retention policy.

I've seenthis poston the community which seems to describe what I'm seeing with the one majorexception. No mail is getting removed.

Here's what I've setup for Retention Policy Tag:

Here's the Retention Policy I've setup to test with my mailbox:

I have 14,470 items in my Deleted Items folder in Outlook and that number is going up as I delete items. I've never seen a decrease that would indicate that this policy is working.

Is this really going to wait until 90 days or so from no as the other post alludes to?

Am I setting this up right and have the right expectations?

Importing pst files in Exchange 2013 issue.

Hello all,

I am hoping to get some assistance with an issue in importing a pst file in Exchange 2013. A little background. The owner of my company is also the CEO of another company. We are working with that company to manage his contacts on their Exchange and our Exchange servers. For future reference Company 1 is my company and Company 2 is the other one.

  • Company 2 exports out his contacts using MailboxExportRequest.
  • They then send them to me to import using the MailboxImportRequest.
  • We tested this out yesterday using a dummy Exchange account on my side and his contacts imported fine. I then changed the name of the pst file and tried importing again to verify it wouldn't cause duplicates. It all worked fine.
  • Today we had his admin edit a contact and add a new contact, Company 2 then exported another pst file for me to import to verify...

Verify Internal mail in Exchange

I am looking for a way to some how notify users that a message in exchange 2010, or newer if I need to upgrade actually came from another internal user. I dont want to block our domain from the internet because some things automated things may send from other servers.

The idea I am thinking of is like a green check mark next to the senders name when the email has only ever been internal to the exchange server to verify that it is not spoofed. Obviously they could have been hacked, but at least not just phishing.

Needing help with autodiscover

Earlier today, we changed the certs for our outlooks providers to wildcards. We believed the autodiscovery cache was supposed to refresh after a while and that outlook clients would reconnect. They are not connecting and we have had to recreate the mail profiles of a few to get it working. I have a few thousand PCs so it is not feasible to go do this to every computer. I have called Microsoft and am awaiting a call back but thought I would ask here since I have found so many answers here before.

Is there a way to force all of the clients to go through autodiscovery again?

Is there a way to mass delete the mail profiles to force autodiscovery?

Is there something else I should be trying instead?

Thanks

Exchange - Name cannot be matched to a name in address list

Hi all,

I have a new user starting next week and I am testing their email and what have you but I everytime i try to open Outlook with their credentials I get "Name Cannnot be matched to a name in address list"

I contacted our US office who manage the exchange server and they told me that everything is fine on their end, yet every troubleshooting I find is for the Exchange server side, which I have no access to!

Is there anything I can do locally to resolve the issue? I get another error saying:

" Cannot start Outlook,Cannot open the outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. The file c:\users\Appdata\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\username.ost is not an outlook data file"

I was thinking to delete that file and try again but Im not certain if that will have any impact on the server side settings.

Any help/feedback will be greatly...

ESEUTIL database engine starting and stopping over and over

Can anyone suggest a fix for an exchange 2003 ESEUTIL database engine starting and stopping over and over. I suspect it may be related to a recent install of Symantec agent for Backup Exec 15.

I'm trying to find why the mailstore dismounts every day at around 5pm. The database is pretty full, but not up to the 75Gb limit.

There are no scheduled jobs of any description, the mailbox maintenance period is between 1-4 am.

There are many hundreds of event 100 and 101 in the application event log.

No other apparent problems with Exchange.

I'm sure the obvious answer is to update Exchange to a more modern version but that's not immediately possible.

Export all Email from exchange for a specific date range?

I'm currently in the middle of an exchange server migration from 2007 to 2013. Somewhere along the way our journaling rules got removed. I've got those back in place and working but we failed to archive mail for about a month. I need to go back an get these emails but I'm having some trouble figuring it out. Thought someone with more exchange experience could help me out.

I need to copy all email from all mailboxes sent, received, sub-folders ect for a specific date range. I also don't want to remove any email in this process, which I don't think export-mailbox does unless you put in the delete switch but would like confirmation.

Here is what I have so far, but I don't know how to pick all mailboxes? I'm also assuming I'll have to run this on both exchange servers. Will the same command work in both places?

Export-Mailbox -Identity >...>

Transport Rules Exchange 2010

Hi,

This is my first question on Spiceworks so please be gentle.

I have setup a transport rule so when an email group (GroupA) is sent an email another group (GroupB) is copied in (either To or CC). This was working fine however sometimes both groups are sent the email so the people in GroupB get the email twice. I set an exception so this would not happen but it does not seem to work and they are still getting the email twice. Any ideas?

Thank you

Connecting second domain computers to primary domain Exchange

I work for a municipality. There is a fiber connection connecting City Hall with the Fire Department. We are on two different domains and subnets, with Sonicwall firewalls configured with a transit network so the two networks can communicate. I can ping, remote locally, etc and the Fire Department has limited access to our resources, for good reason. Currently, all external departments utilize a terminal services remote gateway to be able to connect their Outlook to our internal email server. Since we are directly connected with Fire via fiber, I was wondering if we could eliminate the need for that gateway for them and have them connect directly to our internal exchange server? I'm assuming there is a way, I just don't know where to start. It would definitely speed up their Outlook email access though if we could do it. We are...

Microsoft Exchange Approval Assistant bounceback message

I have never seen anything like this before and apparently neither has Google.  I am hoping that with the help of some brilliant Spiceheads we can figure this out.  I have a user in our Exchange that as of today every external email that she sends out receives a bounceback message from Microsoft Exchange Approval Assistant saying the following:

Your message may be delayed for the following recipients because moderators are not available or are away for an extended period.

I am stumped and honestly freaking out a little bit here.  Any input would be appreciated, thanks.

Exchange Install Issue

I am the administrator of a small network that is currently running Exchange 2007 for email. I am trying to add a new Exchange 2013 server to my network, but am having install issues.

I originally built a new virtual server and installed Exchange 2010 to it. The install completed, but the management console would not load and the management shell would not connect to the server, so I could not configure the server. After many hours of work, I ended up deleting the virtual server and starting over. I used ADSIEDIT to remove the references to the server and removed the user accounts from AD Users and Computers.

I next attempted an install of Exchange 2013 onto a new virtual server. I was able to run all the pre-requisite tasks successfully, so my schema and domain are prepped correctly. I have no errors when I run AD synchronization or...
