Hello everyone,
I have one virtual machine host (HP Proliant DL 380 G7, Windows 2008r2) that I'm worried about it failing. I've recently had 3 memory slots fail on it and I want to get everything off of it and move my VM's to a new VM host system that I have so I can send the failing system out for servicing.
The previous IT Manager setup 3 LUN's on the system:
LUN 1- OS
LUN 2- Storage for Exchange 2010 database
LUN 3- Storage for an Exchange 2010 Hub Transport server
LUN's 2 and 3 are set to Offline in the Storage Management console and Hyper-V accesses the two LUN's as additional drives for the Exchange & Hub Transport servers.
I've been reading up on some articles about moving an Exchange database and the articles are saying to turn off the Exchange server, then move the database, and then turn it back on and point to the new database location.
I want to create a new dynamic VHD and copy the Exchange Database File there instead of just being on an offline LUN Drive or drive somewhere. The Exchange Database file is 1.26TB in size. I want to virtualize it so I can move it around and have the dynamic capabilities for scaling. Is this a good idea?
I'm also worried about the downtime it will take to copy the files from the LUN to the new VHD on the new virtual machine host system. In doing some network speed tests to copy a 1GB file, I'm getting 604Mbps for write and 867Mbps for read. I plugged the numbers into a calculator and it is showing it will take 7 hours to copy the file. Does sound right?
Does anyone have any other advice or anything else they could recommend in doing this project?
Thanks,
John
